The Candidate
If you're passionate about programming and eager to build a career in commercial software development, this could be the perfect role for you. We are searching for a graduate, who loves programming to develop a career in commercial software development. Although we are looking for graduate capability this might be achieved without being a university graduate, we are interested in versatility, capacity and competence.
Why Would you want to be a programmer here
Village is a warm place to work and do serious programming solving business problems. We are looking for people who can become great programmers. In recruiting we will be looking for people who will be good at the job, good for the team and good for our clients.
We will offer a chance to become part of an enthusiastic supportive team of people who like to get stuck into commercial programming. We are looking for a permanent team member so rather than knowing specific technologies to date, becoming a great programmer within our team is our guiding principle.
All companies have their pros and cons which will suit some people and not others, please look at the careers page of our website and get a feel for whether this is a place you would be happy.
There are lots of technical career routes out there. It is worth thinking what we do. We work on functionally rich, largely bespoke systems. This is largely in C# and Angular taking a software engineering approach. This involves both understanding of how systems work, object oriented design, design patterns, refactoring, testing. And this ability to build these things. We love this work, but others would rather work in something more focused on consumer based graphics and apps, or more immediate commercial Analyst Programmer roles, these are all great and we work with these people, but it is not what we do.
The Job
A Graduate developer works in a team led by a senior developer on a number of development roles. The days are spent largely working in Visual Studio or Visual Studio Code at the coal face of software.
-
The post holder will be involved in the development, maintenance and support of business applications.
-
The applications will often be working in C# to develop back end systems with browser based front ends largely written in Angular or React.
-
The applications will involve a range of technologies including SQL and related business intelligence technologies.
-
Development is done using object oriented technologies and techniques
-
The trainee will develop in the key commercial software development skills including unit testing, refactoring and design patterns.
-
Working alongside experienced software developers the post holder will expect to be developed into a valuable member of the software development team.
Skills
-
Candidate is expected to have strong communication skills suitable for holding discussions with end users of systems. They must have the gravitas to confidently work alongside client’s staff.
-
A background and enthusiasm for software development is essential, preferably with an understanding of object oriented development. You will thrive in this job if you have the fundamental ability to be a great coder.
-
A good technical degree with a substantial software element would be expected. Other demonstrations of technical aptitude and competence may be acceptable.
-
A demonstrable understanding of database design and management.
-
The end work will involve C# .NET, a proven track record in this or any equivalent language would be useful, but we recruit potential at this level.
-
The end work will involve website design (using Angular/HTML/CSS) some demonstration of capability in this area is required, although this is not a graphical design role.
-
We expect candidates to be enthusiastic, motivated, and competent programmers. We expect people to be technically curious as to how things work.
-
We don't expect people to be experienced in every programming language in the world - therefore we will help people learn the specific languages and technologies.
Place of Work:
Normal place of work will be in Village’s pleasant offices in the commercial district of Liverpool next to Moorfield station. However, work might involve periods of work based at clients in the Merseyside on rare occasions travelling further afield. This is unusual but it does happen.
All team members should be near enough to commute without it being a hassle, this is a role that involves working together in the office for much of the week. Others have Remote First hybrid jobs, but this is not one.
Village is an office first company. 3 Days a week the whole team is in, new graduates also need to be in other days, which reduce as their experience develops after a year or two.
Career opportunities:
We are committed to providing career development and enhanced opportunities through continuous knowledge transfer, learning and mentoring. Our developers work closely and collaboratively with clients on engineering solutions. As such we are looking for technical people who are also natural collaborators.
If all this looks exciting to you and you think you might fit the bill, please write in and apply.
Applying: Please send a covering letter along with your current CV to the contact named below. For this post we are looking at direct applications with a right to work in the UK and who are commutable to Liverpool City Centre.
Please note that we can get a large number of applicants from around the world, it is a big world and we have limited time we can therefore only really follow up those who are in commuting distance of the office.
We enjoy working here, but we don't fool ourselves that the graduate opportunity is sufficiently unique to move to Liverpool if you have not already got a reason to be here and love the place. We have a large number of applicants and are likely to focus on those who for whatever reason have a reason to be local.
We will offer an open day for people to visit the company and see what we do before fully committing to the application process.
After the closing date we will invite a number of candidates to undertake an online programming test. After this we will invite in successful candidates to carry out a more detailed programming task. These will be considered blind (without access to gender, ethnicity data etc) we will then open CV's and invite the most likely candidates to interview.
