Graduate BI Developer

First thing to say is we have an open day on 20th March sign up here https://forms.office.com/e/05tJ7tYTRm

The Candidate

If you take satisfaction in finding what the data means perhaps this is a great job for you. We are searching for a graduate, who wants to gather, organise and display data to drive business decisions. In reality you have to be sharp with numbers and seeing how the world might be measured. You might have some technical experience of number handling in an university, business or other format.

Why Would you Do this here

Village is a warm place to work and do serious development while solving business problems. We are looking for people who can become great Business Intelligence developers and consultants. In recruiting we will be looking for people who will be good at the job, good for the team and good for our clients.

We will offer a chance to become part of an enthusiastic supportive team of people who like to get stuck into commercial BI projects. We are looking for a permanent team member so potential to become a great BI developer within our team is our guiding principle rather than specific technologies to date.

All companies have their pros and cons which will suit some people and not others, please look at the careers page of our website and get a feel for whether this is a place you would be happy.

The Job

The post holder will be involved in the development, maintenance, and support of business intelligence systems and database systems.

The applications will involve a range of technologies this will include SQL and related technologies (TSQL, SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, Power BI).

Identifying sources of data in client’s organisations, understanding them in discussion with the business people preparing them for reporting.

You must be able to listen and understand, structure a problem around its data and put across a solution in a way that is listened to by business people.

The trainee will both work on technical developments but also identifying and understanding client’s needs.

  • Candidate is expected to have communication skills suitable for holding discussions with end users of data. They must have the gravitas to confidently work alongside client’s staff.
  • A basic competence in software tooling will be required alongside an aspiration to strengthen this.
  • A good numerate or business-focused degree and an aptitude for spreadsheets, numbers and other analytical methods would be required. Other demonstrations of technical aptitude and competence may be acceptable.
  • A demonstrable understanding of database design and management would be useful, but we understand most people haven’t done this.
  • We expect people to be curious about the numbers that underpin businesses, curious and about how businesses work and then able to manipulate the underlying data to provide insights.
  • We understand that few graduates have strong BI capabilities, so we are looking for what experience and aptitude people have, so they can be trained up.

Place of Work:

Normal place of work will be in Village’s pleasant offices in the commercial district of Liverpool next to Moorfield station. However, work might involve periods of work based at clients in the Merseyside on rare occasions travelling further afield. This is unusual but it does happen.

All team members should be near enough to commute without it being a hassle, this is a role that involves working together in the office for much of the week. Others have Remote First hybrid jobs, but this is not one.

Village is an office first company. 3 Days a week the whole team is in, new graduates also need to be in other days, which reduce as their experience develops after a year or two.

Career opportunities:

We are committed to providing career development and enhanced opportunities through continuous knowledge transfer, learning and mentoring. Our developers work closely and collaboratively with clients on engineering solutions. As such we are looking for technical people who are also natural collaborators.

If all this looks exciting to you and you think you  might fit the bill, please write in and apply.

Applying:  Please send a covering letter along with your current CV to the contact named below. For this post we are looking at direct applications with a right to work in the UK and who are commutable to Liverpool City Centre.

Please note that we can get a large number of applicants from around the world, it is a big world and we have limited time we can therefore only really follow up those who are in commuting distance of the office.

We enjoy working here, but we don't fool ourselves that the graduate opportunity is sufficiently unique to move to Liverpool if you have not already got a reason to be here and love the place. We have a large number of applicants and are likely to focus on those who for whatever reason have a reason to be local.

We will offer an open day for people to visit the company and see what we do before fully committing to the application process.

After the closing date we will invite a number of candidates to undertake an online programming test. After this we will invite in successful candidates to carry out a more detailed programming task. These will be considered blind (without access to gender, ethnicity data etc) we will then open CV's and invite the most likely candidates to interview.
