Mid BI Developer

We have a BI team that works on a number of bespoke data solutions and also supports our application development team on their database issues. We are not directly looking for someone to fill a post, but if someone came along who had the right skillset and outlook and wanted to join the team, we can look at a way to make it happen.

The Candidate

We are involved in a range of BI and data issues on behalf of enterprise clients. Generally this involves data engineering to build a data warehouse and the associated fields of SQL, ETL, Data Lakes and related technologies such as Azure, ADF, SSIS, Synapse, PowerBI. We also support application developers with database design, implementation, row level security etc. A good fit would be someone who understands and can efficiently deliver on these skill sets. But also the skill set to explore customer needs and design a viable delivery model while also engaging in projects and supporting the users as we go.

We are a consultancy, this means clients pay us and expect some bang for their buck and we need to move from project to project. This dynamic environment appeals to some people but others would rather

Why Would you Do this here

Village is a warm place to work and do serious development while solving business problems. We are looking for people who can become great Business Intelligence developers and consultants. In recruiting we will be looking for people who will be good at the job, good for the team and good for our clients.

In keeping with our wider software engineering skill base we are a place of work that suits team players. We know that there are some great lone wolve developers out there and we work with and admire some. But our approach is collegiate and based on team work. This suits some people and not others, while there is also room for individual brilliance, this is a place that suits the team work people.

All companies have their pros and cons which will suit some people and not others, please look at the careers page of our website and get a feel for whether this is a place you would be happy.  We are a technically oriented company 'passion, curiosity and expertise' are among out common values, the team suits people who genuinely think 'Oh good I get to play with data today' and who are interested not just in how to engineer the data pipelines but about what it means to the client. Some people stay a few years, some decades we would want your time as part of the Village team to be a significant part of your professional life, these are the days.

The Job

The post holder will be involved in the development, maintenance, and support of business intelligence systems and database systems.

The applications will involve a range of technologies this will include SQL and related technologies (TSQL, SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, Power BI, ADF, Synapse, Fabric). But we understand that if you can use one technology stack well you can probably adapt to another.

Identifying sources of data in client’s organisations, understanding them in discussion with the business people preparing them for reporting of one kind or another. Our clients pay us to sort data but they are looking for a system that allows them to make insights.

You must be able to listen and understand, structure a problem around its data and put across a solution in a way that is listened to by business people.

A candidate for this role will have shown 4+ years of experience crunching away at data problems. Will have had some exposure to end users and clients and some commercial awareness of the pressures they are under.

We would expect a team member at this level to help mentor and engage with more junior and peer team members, and there is the opportunity to rise to a team leader level.

Place of Work:

Normal place of work will be in Village’s pleasant offices in the commercial district of Liverpool next to Moorfield station. However, work might involve periods of work based at clients in the Merseyside on rare occasions travelling further afield. This is unusual but it does happen, you can't beat being there to understand what people need.

All team members must be near enough to commute without it being a hassle, this is a role that involves working together in the office for much of the week. There are lots of remote first hybrid jobs, but if that is what you are after this is not for you.

Village is an office first company. 3 Days a week the whole team is in, new graduates also need to be in other days, which reduce as their experience develops after a year or two other team members may need to be around for these graduates on occasions beyond the core Tue/Wed/Thu office days.

Career opportunities:

We are committed to providing career development and enhanced opportunities through continuous knowledge transfer, learning and mentoring. Our developers work closely and collaboratively with clients on engineering solutions. As such we are looking for technical people who are also natural collaborators.

If all this looks exciting to you and you think you  might fit the bill, please write in and apply.

When in a consultancy such as Village there are opportunities to sort clients issues, from this there are ultimately opportunities to lead, projects, teams, technology specialism.

Most of our team are 5 days a week, but we do have a few 4 day a week people, Mon to Thu or Tue to Fri, so we are open that that.

Applying:  Please send a covering letter along with your current CV to the contact named below. For this post we are looking at direct applications with a right to work in the UK and who are commutable to Liverpool City Centre.

Please note that we can get a large number of applicants from around the world, it is a big world and we have limited time we can therefore only really follow up those who are in commuting distance of the office.

We review applications for this role on a case by case basis, depending on what opportunities a new candidate opens up to pull them in.
